App Reveiw

Alright friends, its time to take a look some educational apps. Being an inspiring teacher I am always looking for new ways to incorporate technology in the classroom. If you have been following the past few posts you know we have been working on a curriculum project.  My focus has been on the scientific method and lab safety. These two topics are taught every year so students can lose interest quickly. While doing my my research I found an app that is entertaining and will definately  keep your students interested. The app is called Brainpop. Brainpop is an animated education site for kids. This site includes videos quizes and games for six different subject areas. The videos are extremely well done and are short enough to keep even the youngest learners interested. The best part of this app are the quizes. They not only cover the content but word origin and critical thinking skills. The app is easy to navigate and overall its fantastic.

  1. BrainPop also has an iPad app called BrainPop Featured Movie ( http://goo.gl/o4jJA ) that allows the user to watch a new video everyday and take an interactive quiz. Unfortunately, it's limited to one movie of the day for the free version unless the user has an account on the website. I like videos in the classroom. Seeing a concept in motion can make a concept come alive for students especially if they are having difficulty understanding it.

  2. I love Brainpop and I have used it many times in the classroom. I dont know what it is about the app, but my kids don't give me a problem when I ask them to take the quiz on it. They really seem to enjoy it's resources. I also agree that this is a great resource to teach lab saftey. I know me personally I get tired of teaching it every year and I dont know how the kids can stand to listen to it again if I am even tired of it.

  3. I find BrainPop to by very age appropriate for my students (grades 2-6, functioning as 3-5 year olds for the most part). The students are usually very engaged when using BrainPop and I think for the most part, they do not see it as learning because they think it is more of a cartoon/comic than an educational video. I will definitely previewing this app to see if I can incorporate it into my classroom!

  4. Although I have never used this app, it sounds like something that would be worthwhile in any subject area. Is this geared for elementary students or could it also be used at the high school level?

  5. This looks like a pretty cool app that would keep students engaged. I know from my coworkers that the scientific method and lab safety are difficult concepts to get students interested in. That's great that you found an app to help fight the "boredom."

  6. I would have to agree I like BrainPop and it is very age appropriate for the younger students. I especially like the videos that the site provides for further instruction and explanation. I have never used the app on the iPad, but I do feel that it would be a great resources for other subject areas as well. I like the screen capture as well.

  7. Brain Pop is a great app. I haven't used it in the classroom but I know of a number of people who have and love it. It is a great way to teach content in a fun and engaging way.

  8. This looks like a great app. I feel like I have heard of it, but I have never used it, or have seen it used before. From the responses everyone else has posted it and the screenshot, it appears to be used primarily with younger students, so I don't know if it has as much applicability in the high school math classroom. However, I really like the idea and creativity of the app and will definitely be looking into it further.
